Copper Coil IUD and Mirena Coil are two different types of birth control methods. Both involve inserting a small T shaped device into a woman’s womb. The devices however function differently to stop pregnancy. Here is the difference between Copper Coil IUD and Mirena Coil. Copper Coil IUD: This is a T shaped COPPER device. Copper has a spermicidal effect. In other words, it kills sperm and also prevents the implantation of fertilized egg in the womb. Copper Coil IUD can be left in the womb for up to 5-10 years. Mirena Coil: Also called the IUS, Mirena Coil is a T shaped device which contains a hormone called Progesterone. This hormone is released slowly very locally into the womb. It acts by thinning the lining of the womb preventing a fertilized egg from getting implanted. Mirena coil can last up to five years. Mirena Coil also inhibits ovulation and significantly reduces blood flow, so. the period becomes much lighter. Some women may find their period stopped completely after many months of use. This is not harmful and many women prefer this. Are There Any Risks? Both Copper Coil IUD and Mirena Coil IUS have a 1/1000 risk of perforation where the womb is punctured. Since womb is a muscle, in 1/20 cases the coil can be pushed out. However, this usually happens in the first 3 weeks. Therefore, its extremely important to visit your doctor for a coil check 3-6 weeks after insertion.
